Edit #1: The start of something new - hi substack!
welcome to the very first edition of Emily's Edit..
I’ve always found writing to be easier.
I had a mentor in college named Eric Johnson who shared a quote that changed my life:
“How do I know what I think until I see what I say?” - E.M. Forster
I think because I spend so much time in front of a camera or on a red carpet that the minutes, hours, days rush by and suddenly it’s Friday and I’m tired and I can’t remember a single thing that’s happened that week and I haven’t had a chance to stop and reflect. So I’m hoping this changes that.
I’m glad you’re here in my little corner of Substack – I want a place to more deeply connect with you and share a bit more of my life on a forum that feels warm and safe and inspiring. I’ve called it Emily's Edit - a weekly newsletter where you can find thoughts and Ideas I love, behind-the-scenes moments from the inspiring people I encounter, carefully curated suggestions to enhance your own life and a moment to pause and connect and find inspiration for your week ahead. I saved all the best edits for you.
If you already know me, hi again. If you’re new here - welcome <3.
I’m Emily Curl, a Georgia-born, NYC-based (I just hit ten years!!) entertainment host. I currently work full time as the Digital Host at iHeartRadio and am also a guest correspondent for E! News. I really, really love my job. It’s nonstop and challenging and working with some of the most creative, ambitious, forward-thinkers in culture is actually a dream come true. I never take it for granted. In future editions, I’ll dive in a little more about how I got where I am and what I’ve learned doing this career (spoiler alert: it’s completely changed me), so if you haven’t subscribed already - don’t forget! While I love a good ole IG photo dump and a TikTok voiceover, this will be my most intimate form of communication and I want you here in this space with me.
We’ll be talking celeb stories, dating in your thirties, the grind of a career in entertainment, family, health, gift guides, and all my musts (must watch, must see, must read, must buy). I’ll include a comment box at the end as well, so send in any thoughts, questions or suggestions. I’m excited for this new project and so happy you’re along for this next iteration of the journey.
So cheers to the first Emily’s Edit and more..
New Year Recommendations:
If you can’t tell already I go nuts for new years. I love goals, ideas, inspirations, a reset. I do a few rituals every year that I wanted to share with you that I find super helpful as we head into 2025 full steam ahead.
Advice from a neuroscientist:
One of my favorite Instagram accounts is called @emonthebrain - she’s a Neuroscientist that studies brain patterns and posts useful tips and tricks for mastering your life. One video that really stuck with me was her talking about the power of music - and how what we listen to can really impact our life. So at the start of every year, I create a playlist based on what I want to tell my brain - this year is all about being sexy, successful, powerful, free and creative. Save mine or start your own.
Building a Mind Movie
My beautiful friend Marina Gunn is always so inspiring to me (and if you love food you must subscribe to her Substack and follow her on Instagram.) She introduced me to this idea last year called a “mind movie.” It’s the digital version of a vision board, but for those of us who are highly visual and creative, it is the absolute best exercise to actually see what you want your life (and your camera roll) to look like over the next year. I curate a board on Pinterest, download the images into capcut, edit the photos in order, then sync it to the song I want as the anthem of my year. I went with ‘Sexy MF’ by Labrinth and here is my Pinterest board so you can start creating your own. You should watch it every day as a visualization tactic for your subconscious. You’ll be so pleasantly surprised by how much it helps guide you in your decision making so your life looks like what you promised yourself. I even used a few photos to make a collage for my phone background. Happy pinning!
The Power of focusing on just *one* thing
If I haven’t mentioned this enough, words are so extremely powerful, and my goal setting works best when I write it down. I just got this Meditation journal at Walmart for $7 when I was home. It’s the perfect way to start your day. Just write *one* intention down. It is so much easier to focus on one thing a day than to list every goal you’ve ever had. While that’s important, I’ve found for me the more consistently I can do something everyday, the more likely it becomes engrained in who I am. Here’s my first page of the new year!
Bad Bitches Use Planners
I’ve been using Erin Condren planners for YEARS. They’re the perfect size, perfect amount of details. At the start of every year, I go through each month and write down (in color coded pens of course) all the big plans I already have for that year: everyone’s birthdays, weddings, etc. Then I add in the other details like addresses, notes, etc. It makes me feel so organized and in control and honestly like a bad bitch. Like yes, this is my life, these are my fave people’s days, I’m busy, I’m booked and I’m ready to plan.
Hyperfixations:
An app that’ll change your life
I’m really putting my fitness goals at the top of my list this year. I want to get to my goal weight of 130, and get leaner and meaner and stronger. One of my best friends Ryan (If you don’t follow him on TikTok you must) introduced me to the app FitBod. It’s super easy to do weight-lifting workouts on my own at a gym. I prefer this (at this moment at least) to big classes. Sometimes I just want to blast music and not stay for an hour and a half at a gym. The shorter and ~vibier~ my workouts are, the more likely I am to go more often.
A tried & true workout set
On that same note, I have tried almost every single workout apparel company. Not kidding. If I like my outfit and think I look hot, I work out 10x harder. I swear - Abercrombie makes the very best workout gear for the most affordable prices. (Some of these companies are getting out of hand with these $200 leggings?! Please.) I just bought this whole set for less than $100. Highly recommend.
Lastly, let me leave you with this. It’s from one of my favorite authors, James Clear, who wrote Atomic Habits. He’s so so good to follow on instagram and has an amazing newsletter as well. He had this to say about the New Year:
“The most reliable way to change your entire life is by not changing your entire life. If you try to change your life all at once, you will quickly find yourself pulled back into the same patterns as before. But if you merely focus on changing one specific habit, work on it until it becomes part of your normal day, you will find your life changes naturally as a side effect. Improve the whole by mastering one thing.”
Happy New Year! Here’s to getting hotter and richer.
